Why wear a garter?

My Journal

Exactly. What’s the point? Where did this tradition come from? It can be tough to track down traditions. When it comes to weddings and traditions many people just do them and don’t ask why. The wedding garter is said to be one of the oldest wedding traditions, dating back to the Dark Ages. After the wedding festivities, guests would accompany the bride and groom up to their bedroom to ensure that they arrived safely and to wish them well.  It was considered good luck for a guest to take home a little piece of the brides clothing.   I did wear a garter on my wedding day (4 years ago!) it was special to me because my Grandma made it with lace from her own wedding dress. My cousins (the ones that are married) have also worn this on their wedding days, so it’s become something of a family heirloom piece. The picture from our wedding album on the right makes me laugh. Did you wear a garter on your wedding day? Would you wear one? I quite like the fact that my garter was a little piece of history. I also think it’s quite nice to have a little secret on your wedding day, and it might be something nice to keep and pass on?   I’ve seen quite a few interesting types of garters… Here are some gorgeous ones from Twigs & Honey. xx

I like the history as you described but what I don’t like is the whole “groom searching under the dress” which for me is so contrived and has been done in every way over & over again. It just feels silly and a bit juvenile in today’s day and age when most couples are already living together. I think both bouquet tosses and garter tosses are kind of silly and a bit awkward. I don’t find them fun and opted not to include either in my wedding.

Hi Kristin, thanks for your comment! I totally agree with you on the whole ‘toss’ thing! x

I wore a garter on my wedding day. It was blue and belonged to my mother, so I managed to tick both the something borrowed and blue tradition boxes. I loved that I got to wear something she had worn on her wedding day! X
