It can be difficult to know what to wear at weddings as a wedding photographer. When I’m in a shop looking for new dresses, here is what’s generally going through my brain, “Hmm… too short, too low, not dressy enough, too dressy, too tight, too long, too bright…” I am always on the hunt for the perfect dress to photograph weddings in.
My criteria – it needs to be black because I want to blend in and be unobtrusive. For the same reasons, it needs to be modest – not too low, or too short. It needs to be comfortable, but also dressy enough to wear to a wedding.
Trust me, the struggle is real.
A few years ago, I was photographing my brother in laws wedding, but I was obviously a guest too. Instead of my normal black dress I would usually wear to weddings, I thought ‘No. I’m going to get a dress that is also wedding guest worthy.’ So off I went, and ended up buying a lovely one from Country Road.
On the morning of the wedding, as I was photographing the brides preparations, the Father of the bride came up to me and said, ‘Did you know there is a hole in the back of your dress?’ Mortified, I ran to the bathroom to check out the damage… I hadn’t heard anything rip…but sadly he was right, there was a giant rip in the back of my dress! Right where you don’t ever want a rip to be.
Thankfully, my sister knew someone who lived around the corner from where the ceremony was, and we ended up running into her house to borrow a dress right before the ceremony began!
Lesson learnt.
Ironically, the dress that I LOVE to photograph in now, is also from Country Road. Although this time, it’s a little less tight around a certain area…
If you are a wedding photographer, can you relate to this struggle? Where have you found your perfect wedding photography attire? Can anyone top my embarrassing wardrobe malfunction? I would love to hear your stories! xx
Ha! love it! I too struggled with what to wear. Personally I love wearing colour :) I love wearing tunics over dark jeans with flats. So my tops/dresses are from Decjuba or Glassons with a lightweight jacket if needed. Depending on the wedding style I would either dress up or down but definitely keeping my style :)
Oh man… I hear ya! Exactly the same struggles finding dresses for weddings! Annnnd I have also had a wardrobe malfunction – the only time I ever wore a high-waisted skirt and shirt to a wedding… I was standing on a chair photographing the guys… jumped down, and ripped right up the front of my skirt!!! Thankfully I knew the bride, and we were just leaving for their house… so when we arrived, her Mum got out her sewing machine and sewed up the rip for me… leaving just a little split at the bottom to pretend like it was meant to be like that!
My friend once travelled 3 hours to photograph wedding, only to find that her whole outfit had literally blown out of an open window somewhere along the way! We should always take two options maybe ;)
Oh man, I know this struggle all too well. I’ve now got myself about 6 different black or navy dress options, as well as two midi skirts with different tops I can do. haha. I’m the same with my criteria but adding to that list would be materials for me. I’ve had a few dresses get torn whilst changing lenses. Hahaha. So now I try stick to cotton, or make sure I don’t spend too much money on outfits so that if I ruin them it’s okay haha.
Ive bought my dresses from Jacqui E as I always go for something dark so I can blend in and like you, modest. I think I have about 3-4 dresses from there now and a couple have pockets too which comes in super handy!
Oh my goodness! This post is true – I struggle so much! I stick to my safe “Cue” dresses. Usually they are made from wool so they breathe but also the skirts are not floaty so they don’t blow up when its windy! (They are also quite hard wearing) Ive worn a skirt where I’ve had to hold it down whilst photographing. Fair to say I only wore that once! But I also struggle with shoes/sandals. I hate scruffy shoes so they only last a few weeks before they get tossed!
The struggle is so real!
I love navy blue for weddings, I have this one dress that is my go to, its just right! Navy blue with little gold anchors on it! It makes me supper happy, and is close enough to black for it to blend in!
How do you find the swap between Melbourne weddings and Auckland ones? I go between Wellington and Napier, and find it such a struggle with the changes in with/weather!
I love that we wear the same thing! I am a black or navy girl with tights…just in case I need to get down on the ground or up a tree I don’t want to traumatize guests or the bridal party! I am an ASOS addict and love to take a cardi or this season I am looking at a blazer for evenings. Great post Kate – I think we spoke about this at Planted with Light haha
