The beautiful craft of Letterpress.

My Journal

I’m in the process of updating my business cards and stationery, and recently had the privilege of visiting Shona Gow at her home letterpress studio – Magpie Press, in Ponsonby Auckland. I always find it so fascinating visiting creative peoples workspaces. I loved listening to Shona passionately describe the art form that is letterpress. This is truly involved work – none of that pushing-a-button-then-leaving-it stuff. The tactile imprint of letterpress into paper is something I have fallen head over heels for. There is nothing else quite like it and I can’t wait to get my hands on my very own letterpressed goodness very soon. Magpie Press – www.magpiepress.co.nz     I think this video by Northwest Digital documents the process of Letterpress wonderfully. The design from this video is made by Aimee Carruthers from Paper Cut Designs for Luckless.
Here are some beautiful wedding invitations from Bespoke Letterpress in Australia.   And of course, if you can’t experience Letterpress right now…there is an app for it. Check out – LetterMPress.

  1. Great blog post Kate! Absolutely love letterpress. My uncle is a printer, and has a Heidelberg press at his home. There’s a great example of the Heidelberg Windmill in the Will Smith movie, Seven Pounds. Always a big fan of Shona’s work too. Cheers Warren.
