Why becoming a mother has made me a better photographer.

My Journal

6 months ago, I wouldn’t have shared this. I’ll admit, I thought no one wanted to hear about this part of my life, and that because I was a Mum I risked becoming irrelevant.

Having kids has changed me in the best way. It’s made me stronger. More patient. More refined.

Here’s 4 ways having kids have made me a better photographer.

1. I have a new level of appreciation and respect for preserving memories. One day, that will be me dabbing tears from my cheeks when my daughter declares her love and promises at her wedding. Just thinking about this day gives me goosebumps, and a lump starts to form in my throat… Becoming a Mum has given me a new level of respect for capturing those precious moments.

2. My time is more limited. This is such a good thing because it means I am super selective about the weddings I photograph. It also means I am way more productive!

3. Having kids has made me more patient. I’ve learnt a whole new level of perseverance. When you can get through little sleep, potty-training, toddler meltdowns, and constant mess you are a stronger person in every aspect of your life!

4. I’ve learnt to view the world in a completely new way. When your baby’s eyes light up in awe of the clouds, and the wind moving through the trees, you learn to tune in and notice the small things. I’ve become more sensitive to my surrounds, which helps so much in capturing often fleeting moments.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Do you think becoming a Mum would make you stronger in your work? xx
