April 10, 2012 April Snapshot

IMG 7200 April Snapshot

I am so late at posting these! The goal for the rest of the year is definitely to blog my ‘snapshot’ posts on the 1st of the month…not when the month is half over…! I hope you had a lovely Easter break, I’m back in Melbourne (until Thursday), Sam and I had his parents come to visit from NZ so we have been on various road trips around Victoria. One of my favourite things to do is antique shopping, we went to this lovely one in the Yarra Valley. I love wondering about the history of each item, imagining what sort of past it had and where it came from. On a total contrast, we went to IKEA yesterday on the hunt for a sofa bed…I would definitely choose antiques over IKEA any day.

APRIL 2012

April will be spent mostly in NZ for me, I’ve got two more lovely weddings this month in NZ and one more in May. Last month, I blogged about exploring a Beloved style of shooting in my photography, and while I haven’t received the field guide in the post yet (hopefully it will come any day now!) I am SO SO excited to have booked a beloved shoot for Sam and I with Leah Kua. I just love Leah’s beautiful, honest photography and like anything, I always want to know what the experience feels like for myself, before I offer it to others. I was photographed by the lovely Fiona back in the early stages of starting my business, because I wanted to know what my subjects (or muses) were feeling. You can see that post here. I think it is so important to be photographed, ESPECIALLY if you are a photographer. If any photographer needs some portraits taken for their website or blog, get in touch! I’d love to help you out. Another shoot I’m excited about for this month is Lucy and Des’ Encore shoot at Whangamata beach. I love Encore photography and I haven’t done one of these shoots for a while, so I’m definitely looking forward to it! Jerry Ghionis is coming to NZ this month, I’m looking forward to going to his talk with my sister Lydia. Are any other photographers reading this going? Let me know! Have a beautiful (rest of) April everyone! xx

SOME MARCH BUSINESS GOALS

Okay I am behind on editing, but the goal this month is to catch up!!!

Design albums.

Get creative with my self portraits! This months photograph was taken by Sam, during a walk/explore of a park in the Yarra Valley…excuse the natural look and untamed hair!

Blog regularly.

Keep creating meaningful experiences for my couples.

Maintain an attitude of gratitude. (Sue Bryce) I highly recommend buying the Sue Bryce 3 day workshop on Creative Live, she is an INCREDIBLE person and an inspiring business women – proud she is a Kiwi too icon smile April Snapshot

Finish reading ‘Awakening the Entrepreneur within’ by Michael E. Gerber. Loving this book! Also definitely recommend reading his other book ‘The E-Myth revisited’.

Meeting with accountant, sort out financial position + goals.

SOME PERSONAL GOALS

Keep running every week day. I’ve just bought some new (pink!) running shoes, so this will definitely help with motivation during the colder months ahead…(for a while anyway!)

Spend time with friends and family in NZ before I leave for Melbourne.

I’ve just bought a Fujifilm Instax Camera. I love this thing! Excited to use it more.

Buy a car in Melbourne!! We are on the hunt at the moment…

Buy a new Sofa Bed for our Apartment in Melbourne (let me know if you happen to come across any antique versions!)

xx

I’m back in NZ! The Gold Coast was beyond amazing…. slightly warmer over there (!!) But it’s good to be back in the land of the long white cloud. I’m so excited to photograph Philippa & Justin’s Matakana wedding tomorrow!

A week before Christmas, I had scheduled in a portrait shoot at the Devonport Jetty in Auckland. The couple had paid a deposit, confirmed the date and time….but didn’t turn up and I was unable to contact them. This is the first time I’ve had a client cancel, but instead of dwelling on what could have been an annoying situation….my sister Lydia (who is my amazing second shooter for most of my weddings this summer) and I did a little workshop. I took photos of her, she took photos of me…and the situation was turned into a learning experience and something fun!

Kelvin & Annie got in contact with me wanting some Portraits of just them together. They were married, had been for nearly 4 years and just wanted this special part of their relationship captured before a baby came along! (Annie was around 10 weeks pregnant when we shot these.) I was so excited when I got their email. As much as I ADORE wedding days, engagement photography and other celebrations – there is something particularly special about photographing a couple for no other reason than to celebrate the love they have for each other. Kelvin & Annie, you guys were inspiring, thank you for your trust. Xxx

January 5, 2012 January Snapshot

IMG 68531 January Snapshot

Happy 2012!! I hope you had a fab last few days of 2011 and are ready to embrace all that 2012 has to offer! It’s only the 5th day in, and January has already been a whirlwind for me… I’m typing this from the sunny Gold Coast, Australia! I’m here to attend and photograph my cousins wedding on Saturday (so excited!!) and staying with my family for a week.

Taking inspiration from this lovely photographer, I’ve decided to change my monthly goals posts to ‘snapshot’ posts. It will still include all my goals for the month, but also what I have planned, what I’m excited about, and what my life looks like at that moment in time. I’m also going to commit to having a self portrait for each month! Hopefully I can get my sister Lydia or someone else to take it for me, so I won’t have to turn on the self timer too much… I got this idea from US photographer Gail Werner. So often, I’m the one behind the camera so this will definitely be a challenge! I’ve always encouraged other photographers to have portraits taken of themselves. I think it’s definitely a vulnerable thing to do as a photographer, but it’s so important! Not only so you can have your photograph on your website profile page, but also so you know what it’s like on the other side. I don’t ever want to forget what my clients are feeling when they are faced with my lens, so I think this is a good way to remind myself monthly. It’s also good to have 12 half decent photos of myself (hopefully) for the year!

JANUARY 2012

This month is the official start of the busy wedding season for me! I’m so excited for all the loveliness ahead. Because we moved to Melbourne in the middle of last year (read more about that in this post) most of my weddings are still in NZ, which means I will be living in NZ from January until April. Luckily, I’ve structured my business to be very portable. While Sam will have to go back to Melbourne (soon!), we are going to be seeing each other every month and thank goodness for Skype!

SOME JANUARY BUSINESS GOALS…

- Finish all outstanding 2011 Queensberry album designs and send to print.

- Create a decent workspace in my Mum and Dad’s office (which they don’t use anymore luckily!)

- Get weddings edited and sent quickly! Don’t get distracted! Luckily, my parents live in the country so there aren’t many distractions…

- Perfect and stick to wedding system!

- Train Lydia to take on more post production.

- Design some custom stationery and get printed.

- Keep blogging consistently!

- Send photographs to wedding vendors.

SOME JANUARY PERSONAL GOALS…

- Eat healthy!

- Keep running every week day… I need some new shoes, maybe that will kick start it!

- Stay in regular contact with Sam and friends in Melbourne.

- Find a mentor! This comes under business too.

I think that’s more than enough to keep me busy for now! I’ve just downloaded this Goal setting app… I haven’t tried it yet, but it looks great! Here’s to a happy and productive January wherever you are xxx

When I met with Sammy and Daniel for their engagement photos I learned that they had first met while cheer-leading. In my naivety, I asked if they were cheer-leading for a sports team? Nope. As I soon learned, cheer-leading is a sport. A seriously competitive one at that! Daniel proposed to Sammy at her 21st Birthday party in front of family and friends. You guys make a beyond gorgeous couple! I could not be more excited to photograph their wedding day in February, at a private property overlooking Wahi Beach! xx

Sarah first contacted me a few months ago because someone from NZ had told her about me. I’m so glad we got to meet! Not only is she completely lovely, it was so nice to hear a fellow kiwi accent and Sarah is also a photographer, so we had lots in common. When Sarah contacted me later about having a shoot with her boyfriend Perry in their new home, I was excited! Most of my shoot locations are usually in a park, field or other outdoor location – and while I love these places, I was really looking forward to doing my first shoot in a home. I think this is such a great idea! Sarah & Perry, thank you for inviting me in xx

November 7, 2011 My weekend.

How was yours?

I had the privilege of photographing my new kiwi friend Sarah & Perry in their gorgeous new home…

2011 11 07 002 My weekend.

Sam & I got $61 fine for parking at the beach for 10 minutes! Didn’t see the signs… Definitely learned our lesson! But the upside was we had a lovely feast of Calamari & Chips overlooking Port Phillip Bay. xx

When Anna emailed me a while ago saying that her and Mitch would like to do another shoot with me, I was SO excited! I first had the opportunity to photograph these two when they won a little Valentines Day competition I was running last year. See their previous shoot here. Since then, Anna & Mitch have moved up to Auckland from Hamilton and it was such a pleasure to photograph them in their new home town! These two have incredible style and I always love their creative ideas, so when Anna suggested the new Rugby World Cup Fanzone on Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour for the shoot location I trusted her 100%. I always love shooting in places I haven’t been before, and I loved this location! Anna & Mitch thank you again for being such an amazing, inspiring and hilarious couple, I enjoyed our time together so much and hope to do it again! xx

Big thank you to Lydia for helping me on this shoot x

Lydia is the second youngest of my 3 sisters. She is in her second year of a Visual Arts degree majoring in Photography at Unitec and is currently flatting in our old house in Auckland. Lydia is an AMAZING help to me, she’s my second shooter and has helped me on about 5 weddings so far – many more coming up this summer, so exciting. I’m spending this week with my sisters and Mum at a CUTE and cosy (studio style…) little 50′s bach in Raglan, love hanging out with them all again. xx
